THE STORY BEHIND THE LEAVES:
FROM CANOPY TO KETTLE
For avid tea drinkers, each morning often begins with boiling water in the kettle. Tea is enjoyed in many different settings, whether alongside a delicious home-cooked meal or as the centerpiece of an afternoon tea party. However, brewing a cup of tea begins long before picking up a box of leaves from the grocery store shelf. Tea leaves grow within living ecosystems that shape their flavor and support environmental diversity. Tea plants thrive across a variety of terrains, where climate, soil, and surrounding biodiversity all contribute to the final flavor of the tea.
Additionally, tea leaves do more than serve as a delicious beverage. The shade provided by natural tea leaf plants protects ecosystems and the habitats of neighboring wildlife.
For example, bird species like the Red-Whiskered Bulbul feed on insects in areas where tea plants grow, and help to keep pest populations in check. In tea gardens that border larger forests, mammals like elephants and leopards find shelter in their leaves. Tea leaves are also a part of a much larger ecosystem where rainfall, neighboring plant species, and terrain help maintain the balance of the natural environment. Notably, when tea is mass-produced in large quantities, ecosystem complexity can be lost. Diverse landscapes offer more nuanced and distinctive flavors and support overall environmental health. Rainforest Alliance works with local farmers to ensure the production of healthy agricultural products and the preservation of ecosystem biodiversity.
